HAMBURG TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The Amber Alert for 7-year-old Sapphire Palmer may have been called off but there are many questions that remain.

Police in Homosassa, Florida, are questioning Amanda Hayward, 30, who fled Michigan to her mother’s home in the Sunshine State.

Sapphire was taken into protective custody.

Hayward’s family said her behavior had become increasingly erratic over the past few weeks and she was hyper paranoid.

Her father, Darryl Hayward, said he woke up to her breaking things in the middle of the night on Monday. He said his daughter grabbed Sapphire and took off.

Amanda Hayward’s  car was found in Ypsilanti and towed. Her purse was found by the side of the road.

Thursday morning, Michigan State Police declared an Amber Alert for Sapphire after it was discovered Amanda Hayward had left with longtime friend Doug Stanko who is a registered sex offender.

Thursday night, Local 4 located Hayward in a town outside of Tampa and got her on the phone.

“We’re more than ok, we’re fine,” Hayward told Local 4. “People have been contacted to let them know we are fine. There is no reason for an Amber alert to be out.”

She also denied traveling with anyone.

“Nope, I am not traveling with anybody,” she said. “No one has touched her and no one has harmed her.”

Hamburg Township police said that’s not true. Stanko’s roommate said he saw the three together on Monday. Authorities say Stanko had left the area before law enforcement in Florida could arrive.
