DETROIT – April in the D is coming to an end, but news around Southeast Michigan hasn’t slowed down.
Here are some of the top headlines from this week on ClickOnDetroit.com:
Ford is recalling nearly 202,000 pickup trucks, SUVs and cars in North America because the automatic transmissions can suddenly downshift to first gear.
The recall covers the 2011 and 2012 F-150 and the 2012 Expedition, Mustang and Lincoln Navigator. Ford says a speed sensor can force vehicles into a downshift.
The company says the problem has caused three crashes but no injuries.
Dealers will inspect the sensors. If they find no trouble codes, they’ll update software. If trouble codes are present they’ll replace parts.
Ford Motor’s profits more than doubled during the first three months of the year, giving the 113-year old automaker its best first quarter in its history.
Ford’s results were lifted by strong U.S. sales and a continued turnaround in Europe. Ford’s European profit during the first quarter topped all of the company’s European earnings collected during the entirety of 2015.
Ford also announced a 10-year plan to transform its Dearborn facilities into a modern, green and high-tech campus.

The mother of a 1-year-old boy who died after being found face down in a bathtub in an Inkster home was released from custody Friday, according to the Inkster Police Department.
Police said the boy, Anthony, was found in a home on Avondale Street after officers responded to an emergency call Monday night about the toddler not breathing. The boy was still in the bathtub when officers arrived. He suffered burns on 50 percent of his body.
The boy’s mother had been in custody since Tuesday.

On a sunny, warm October afternoon in 2015, witnesses were horrified to see a black Cadillac Escalade smash into a ditch, hit a utility pole and land upside down, trapping the driver inside.
The 911 calls reveal many called for help and dispatchers were quick to say no one should touch the driver to prevent further injury.
What those witnesses didn’t know was the driver was Kim Mathers, the ex-wife of Detroit rapper Eminem.
What they also didn’t know is what police reports and dashcam video would later reveal: The crash was allegedly no accident. According to police reports, Mathers told first responders it was intentional.
Now, her case is raising red flags, including why a drunken driving case was sealed in court.

Detroit real estate czar and Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and Pistons owner Tom Gores are behind the push to create a Major League Soccer team in the city.
The two announced their partnership in a press release on Tuesday. During a news conference Wednesday, Gilbert announced a $1 billion plan for the failed Wayne County jail site would include a stadium which would seat 20,000 to 25,000 fans for soccer, rugby and lacrosse. Gilbert said he and his partners are “trying to paint the vision this can be done.”

MLS Commissioner Don Garber was in Detroit for the news conference.
“This is a city on the rise,” said Garber. “We say we’re a league on the rise.”

‘I lashed out completely inappropriately’
Tigers outfielder Tyler Collins directed an obscene gesture at booing home fans after losing a ball in the lights Monday night.
“To be at home and to hear boos after that play hit a trigger inside of me and I lashed out completely inappropriately,” Collins said after Detroit beat the Oakland Athletics 7-3. “I’m absolutely embarrassed it happened and I’m very sorry to everybody in Detroit.”

Chief James Craig says 3-tier approach being used to curb violence in city
In the wake of several deadly shootings, three of which involved children, Detroit Police Chief James Craig is issuing a stern warning to criminals.
“We will no longer be de-sensitized by the violence that has been historic in this city … Criminals beware, we’re going to be there,” he said. “[We’re] taking back neighborhoods, one neighborhood at a time.”
Withouth giving too much detail, Craig said his department is implementing an aggressive and holistic approach to curbing violent crime, which includes targeting specific areas with increased enforcement and increased community-policing.
“We, the police, cannot do it alone,” Craig said.

Kid Rock said in a statement he’s devastated about the death of his assistant who was killed in an ATV accident at the singer’s home in Nashville, Tennessee.
Metro Nashville Police Department said in a news release that 30-year-old Michael Sacha was found dead early Monday morning.
The musician posted a statement on his website saying Sacha was “one of the greatest young men I have ever had the pleasure to not only work with, but also to become friends with.”
Police said the accident happened when Sacha drove two people down the driveway to meet an Uber driver at midnight. Sacha crashed while riding the ATV back to the home. Rock, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, and a friend found Sacha on an embankment late Monday morning and called for help.

The new home for the Detroit Red Wings will be called “Little Caesars Arena.”
Team ownership made the announcement Thursday morning.
“Little Caesars is part of the fabric of our community,” said Chris Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc.

Ilitch said to have the company’s namesake in their hometown on a world-class facility is “an amazing tribute.”
The arena is scheduled to open in September 2017. It will be part of the larger District Detroit, which sits at Woodward Avenue and Interstate 75.
Little Caesars President David Scrivano called it a “strategic investment in our brand.”
